What is a block puzzle game?

A block puzzle game gives you a grid — almost always 8×8 — and a tray of three shapes made of squares. You drag a shape onto the grid. Fill an entire row or an entire column and it clears, freeing space. There is no timer and no falling piece: unlike Tetris, the shapes wait for you, so every loss is a decision you made rather than a reflex you missed. The game ends when none of the three shapes in your tray can fit anywhere on the board.

How scoring actually works

Placing a shape scores a little. Clearing a line scores a lot. Clearing several lines with a single placement scores far more than clearing them one at a time, and consecutive clears build a combo multiplier that decays the moment you place a shape without clearing anything. This is the whole game: a good block puzzle player is not placing shapes, they are building the conditions for a multi-line clear two or three moves ahead.

Five habits of high scorers

None of this is secret, and all of it is hard to do consistently under pressure.

1. 01Work from the edges inward. The centre of the board is the most flexible real estate you have — spending it early is how runs end at 3,000 points.
2. 02Never leave a single-cell hole. One orphaned square can block every 3×3 and L-shape in the game.
3. 03Read all three shapes before you place the first one. The tray is the puzzle; the board is just the state.
4. 04Keep one clear column in reserve. It is your escape hatch when the tray hands you three awkward shapes at once.
5. 05Break your combo on purpose rather than by accident. A deliberate reset beats a forced one.
